Ben: Rules Question
Here is a more eloquent description of what happens when a Magma Phoenix with a Basilisk Collar dies...

Q: If I have a Magma Phoenix equipped with a Basilisk Collar and it gets destroyed for some reason, will its triggered ability remember the lifelink and deathtouch from the equipment?

A: Yes, essentially. Leave-the-battlefield abilities trigger from the battlefield, so when the triggered ability resolves, the damage is dealt by the ghost image of the Magma Phoenix as it existed on the battlefield. The last time Magma Phoenix was seen on the battlefield, it had deathtouch and lifelink, so the damage will be deathtouchy and lifelinky, resulting in lots of life gain and mayhem.

It still makes little logical sense that a "leave-the-battlefield" ability would trigger from the battlefield. If Magma Phoenix was PtE'd, the effect wouldn't happen.
The wording of "When ~this~ is put into a graveyard from the battlefield" leads me to believe it would trigger in the graveyard because obviously, if it was Path'd, it's ability wouldn't trigger because it never had the oppurtunity to find the graveyard. I understand that it does happen. It's just not logical at all. I just find it odd that a Magma Phoenix still acts as though it has the Basilisk Collar on it when it enters the graveyard when it truly doesn't have it equipped, or any creature that would be put into a graveyard and deal damage, for that matter.
From my logical standpoint it would seem that the ability doesn't trigger until the Phoenix is in the graveyard, in which case, with the ability on the stack, state based effects are checked, the Phoenix doesn't have the collar, and therefore doesn't have lifelink and deathtouch. That was just the way I was thinking and the whole reason that I completely disagree with this type of ruling.
My logic will never allow me to agree with this. However, it seems that I must.

I think that they need to errata the magma phoenix to work like the new combat damage, because how can something deal damage to something else if it isn't even "in play" anymore.

I think whoever made the rules was high when they made them.
