New Banned/Restricted Lists
As of July 1, Sword of the Meek, and Hypergenesis are banned in Extended, and Mystical Tutor is banned in Legacy.

        Thoughts?

This was on Evan Erwin's "The Magic Show", so I'm 100% sure it's correct.

What the fuck is all I can say. Thopter foundry and hypergenesis are both tier 1 decks in extended, but not broken to the point of banning. Mystical is a staple of blue in legacy, but it seems comparable to them banning Jace in standard.

I didn't realize that Hypergensis was winning a bunch of tourny's? I know it is a top 8 deck but I didn't realize that everyone was playing it?? I know that Mystical Tutor was banned in Legacy when I first started playing Magic so I am not surprised it is banned again.

         Well, Jace isn't even good.

Maybe the Eldrazi had a strong impact on hypergenesis. And since I have never played with or against sword of the meek, I don't really know, but the combo seems pretty broken. Or maybe Wizards just wants everyone to buy new cards

Yeah, Im not too angry about the extended stuff, but there was no reason at all for Mystical Tutor to get banhammered. Sure, almost all of the blue decks in the format play it, but I would call it far from broken to the point of deserving the kick in the ass. What's gonna be next? Fetchlands being banned in legacy?

So they unbanned Grim Monolith and Illusionary Mask? The Mask doesn't matter as I think Dreadnaught was the only viable card to use with it but Grim Monolith still has Power Artifact for the infinate mana combo doesn't it?

I think the reason behind the Extended bannings is because everyone will play those 2 decks because they are already established archetypes. Wizards wants players to create new decks instead on falling back on those decks.

I do think they need to shake Extended up as it seemed to me at least to be a format that has lost a lot of popularity.

Mystic Tutor was banned primarily because it is the key card in Legacy reanimator and TEPS decks. Reanimator decks have done well in recent large events, but they haven't really been dominating the format. Zoo decks have had the most top 8 finishes in the SSG 5k tournaments, and nobody is calling for them to ban Wild Nacatal or Tarmogoyf.
Wizards seems to be making an effort to make older formats (i.e. Extended and Eternal) more interactive and less combo oriented. The goal seems to be to make creature decks more playable and hate out combo decks that win in 1 or 2 turns without the opponent being able to play any significant cards of his or her own (at least pre-sideboarding). Hypergenesis and Thopter Foundry are the two primnary combo decks in Extended and Wizards is trying hard to make Extended into a more fun format that people actually want to play. Thopter-Foundry decks became dominant towards the end of the last Extended season, and apparently Wizards wanted to do everything possible to reinvigorate the format. Hypergenesis was never particularly dominant, but it was a deck that could win on turn one or two without the opponent ever being able to do anything. Viable combo decks still exist in both Extended and Legacy, but they tend to be slower, more interactive decks (such as Painter's-Grindstone or Living End). It's kind of surprising that they haven't done anything to hate out Dredge decks though, as Dredge is probably the least fun deck to play against in either format.

With Ravnica leaving extended, won't Dredge be dead there?

Good point. It's still a pretty big player in Legacy though.

Anybody else see Tarmogoyf drop to $50.00?

That's strange. Tarmagoyf is out of Time Spiral Block, so he should be legal in the new Extended. And he sees a ton of play in Vintage/Legacy.

So in 4 months or whenever Scars comes out it rotates out.
