merfolk
what are some peoples opinions of the merfolk deck in legacy? i really want to have a legacy deck but im not sure which one to build, merfolk seems to be the most resiliant and seems to almost be an auto win against combo decks do to the force of wills and stifles. i know that zoo and thopter both have a good matchup but neither of those decks seem super against re-animator. opinions are appreciated, thanx

In my opinion, merfolk is probably one of the best decks in legacy. It plays the most important card in legacy, force of will. It can ignore countermagic with aethervial, has both lifegain and removal in jitte, and can play both aggro and control thanks to its own countermagic. Between daze and force, it can stop the most important spells opponents play. Merfolk also plays alot of basic lands, as christian pointed out, so nonbasic land hosers like wasteland have minimal impact. And you can tailor your sideboard quite a bit, making bad matches better! In my opinion, a good choice for legacy.

You obv need 4 Leyline of Troll Shroud in white sb in legacy.

Why, combodecks will just bounce it. White layline is just like everyother permanent based solution to combo, no better than pithing needle or meddling mage, in my opinion. If the leyline ITSELF had shroud, then it would be an auto-include.

If they don't have the usually 1-2 pieces of bounce, they lose. You also have forces and daze to stop them from touching it.

The Leyline buys you time, which is a big deal.

Off topic, but White Leyline + Gideon in standard is pretty good.

I guess I can see your point, however, I still dont think that white leyline is a good merfolk sideboard card. Merfolk should already be able to frustrate combo with cursecatcher, daze, stifle, and force. Besides, in merfolk, you cant hardcast leyline. This means that you have to mull until you find it. And even if you do find it, all of the rest of the leylines in your deck become blanks. In legacy, 1 blank off the top of your deck can be lethal.

My bad, was thinking that list had Tundras and H fountains.

This is the deck list i have decided to build. If anybody has any of these cards and would be willing to sell them i will buy them off of you.
The more expensive cards might take me a little time to buy because i have to sell my car audio equipment to buy the forces and mutivaults.

I agree with Mike. Merfolk has plenty of defenses as is. I like Leyline for other decks, such as Zoo and Stax.

A solid investment, given the way Legacy cards keep skyrocketing in price. The SSG 5k tournaments are definitley stimulating increased interest in the format. I wouldn't be surprised if the Revised dual lands hit the triple digit mark in the next year or so.

Mutavault may be the cheapest of those cards. Even Aether Vial's are $10 each on Ebay.
